Interning In Japan: Gaining Professional Skills And Growing Independence

My name is Cailym and I have completed a six-week International Internship with YOUNEEDS Co., Ltd. (“YOUNEEDS”). Embarking on an internship in Japan has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. This opportunity was particularly unique as it marked my first time working in a remote-first company, allowing me to grow as a more independent and resourceful professional. Over the course of the internship, I not only expanded my skill set but also gained valuable insights into Japanese business culture and international collaboration.

Becoming an Independent Remote Worker in Japan

This internship was my introduction to the world of remote work—a significant shift from my previous professional experiences. Initially, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I quickly learned how to stay organized, communicate effectively, and deliver results without direct supervision. Working independently challenged me to manage my time efficiently and take initiative on tasks. I developed habits that will serve me well in my future career, including strong self-discipline, problem-solving skills, and clear digital communication.

The most exciting part of this experience was the trust my company placed in me. YOUNEEDS, a Japanese market entry consulting firm, truly valued my input and decisions. Being able to see my contributions have a direct impact on their projects was incredibly rewarding for me. It was a motivating experience to work for a company that fosters creativity and collaboration, even in a remote-first environment.

Gaining Experience Across Multiple Fields

During my internship, I had the opportunity to take on a diverse range of assignments that strengthened my knowledge in key areas of business. My tasks included developing marketing strategies and exploring marketing theories, which gave me practical insights into how businesses tailor their approach to reach target markets.

In addition, I researched and created comprehensive lists of chambers of commerce and public entities for potential collaboration partners for YOUNEEDS. This task helped me understand the importance of building networks in the Japanese market and identifying strategic opportunities for growth. Beyond research, I also wrote engaging blog posts for the company website—a responsibility that allowed me to refine my content creation and storytelling skills.

Attending Exclusive Events in Japan

One of the highlights of my internship was attending events that showcased innovation, creativity, and international business collaboration. I had the chance to visit Japan Startup Expo 2024, where I observed cutting-edge advancements in technology and a strong presence of AI companies. It was inspiring to witness firsthand the energy and ambition driving Japan’s startup ecosystem.

I also attended French Fashion Days at the French Embassy in Tokyo, an event celebrating the intersection of French and Japanese fashion. Experiencing these cultural and business-oriented events not only deepened my understanding of global markets but also allowed me to network with professionals from various industries.

My Reflections on my Journey Throughout Japan

Reflecting on this experience, I feel incredibly grateful for the skills I gained and the opportunities I was given. I grew as a professional, learned how to thrive in a remote-first working environment, and discovered the value of adaptability in today’s globalized world. This internship has solidified my passion for international business and has provided me with valuable tools to pursue future opportunities.

If you’re considering interning abroad, I highly encourage you to embrace the challenge. Working in a foreign setting not only builds your professional competencies but also broadens your perspective on the world.
