The Exciting World of the Startup JAPAN 2024 EXPO

In November 2024, YOUNEEDS Co., Ltd. (“YOUNEEDS”) had the opportunity to attend the Startup JAPAN 2024 EXPO at Big Sight in Tokyo. Alongside our CEO Waka Someno and Translator Ottilia Tanaka, we (interns Chloe Martin and Cailym Livingstone-Thorn) also attended the first day of the event. As YOUNEEDS international interns, we are taking over the blog this week to report on our experience at Startup JAPAN 2024.

Startup JAPAN was organized by business card application Eight to encourage stakeholder involvement in startups; by creating an event where they can come together to both connect and interact. There were two main events at Startup JAPAN 2024: Startup JAPAN EXPO; Japan’s largest startup exhibition and FUNDeal; an event focused on investment and business collaboration with startups. These events featured an innovative ticketing system that used the Eight business card app to obtain tickets; allowing participants to easily make connections while conveniently accessing their ticket.

Held at Tokyo Big Site on November 20 and 21, 2024, the Startup JAPAN 2024 featured over 300 startup companies. These businesses included generative AI, Deep Tech, Web3, Smart City marketing support, overseas ventures, and many more; all trying to make connections and grow their presence in the current market. There was also a range of major companies present to offer their services and support to startups. Most of the companies at the expo featured displays to exhibit their products and services; with many offering promotional materials such as flyers, stickers, and even rice. English support was provided at numerous startups, with an “English OK” sticker displayed on their booths.

The Future of Japan

The Startup Japan Expo 2024 provided a fascinating glimpse into emerging trends and innovations, with AI taking center stage. A significant number of startup companies showcased AI technologies, particularly chatbots. Among these, one standout company introduced a unique solution: if their chatbot couldn’t answer a query, the response would be escalated to their human team for a personalized reply. This hybrid model of AI and human interaction could redefine customer service standards. Another intriguing application of AI was in public transportation, hinting at a future of smarter and more efficient mobility solutions.

Beyond AI, the expo featured several innovative startups in diverse fields. A noteworthy highlight was a platform dedicated to helping working mothers find employment, addressing a critical societal need. Another standout was a virtual tourism company enabling users to visit and pay respects at Japanese shrines digitally—an innovative approach blending technology with tradition.

One of the more niche but intriguing businesses offered detailed information on fish species, tailored to specific local areas—a testament to Japan’s enduring connection with its marine heritage. Other exhibitors included a telescope company showcasing cutting-edge designs, appealing to astronomy enthusiasts.

Final Thoughts

While the expo’s breadth was impressive, the depth of some innovations felt limited, with many startups relying heavily on AI in their market offering. However, it was inspiring to witness the many creative solutions addressing real-world challenges, reflecting Japan’s unique blend of tradition and technology.

Attending industry events such as these is always important as it allows YOUNEEDS to get a sense of the direction that the market is heading and how Japan is evolving.
